Hoosier Lifetime Award: Dr. Robert Abel of Elkhart County

At the 2014 Age of Excellence awards ceremony, Dr. Robert Abel of Elkhart County received the distinguished Hoosier Lifetime Award. This award recognizes an outstanding Hoosier who has demonstrated extraordinary service to his or her community. 

Dr. Abel grew up on a farm in Harrison Township in Elkhart County.  He graduated from Wakarusa High School, Goshen College and then Indiana University School of Medicine, in 1950. 

He served in the US Army in World War II.  He has been a member of the Elkhart County 4-H Board for 62 years, a member of the Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce for over 60 years, and has received numerous awards for his work Member of Wakarusa Lions Club for 60 years.

In 1962, he was appointed by a judge to develop the WaNee School System and served on the board for 38 years.  He served on the Indiana 4-H Foundation Board for 16 years, has been awarded three Sagamore of the Wabash, and was elected to the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

Dr. Abel served as a Medical Director for the Bashor Home and Holiday Rambler, and Millers Merry Manor.  He has been married for 65 years with numerous children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.


He has delivered 10,612 babies over the years.  And at age 89 he still makes rounds giving patient care 5 days a week, including offering house calls for his elderly patients.  As this is only a portion of his accomplishments, Dr. Abel is truly an inspirational man in the Elkhart community and the deserving recipient of the 2014 Hoosier Lifetime Award.
