At the 2014 Age of Excellence awards
ceremony,
Amy Adams, of LaPorte County, was awarded Caregiver of the Year for a Disabled
Person. This acclaimed award is given to an unpaid caregiver who
provides compassionate care to a family member or a friend who is less than 60
years of age.
Amy is a dedicated mother who raises funds by running in
marathons. “I hate to run… but I hate the fact that my child can’t run - even
more, so I run for her,” Amy expresses. Her running has helped raise an
impressive $17,000. She has hosted three give-back nights and helped
coordinate the annual “Zumba for Retts.” Amy has sold t-shirts, hosted a
“cocktails and creativity” night, held raffles, and has sold beautiful
ornaments, lanterns and homemade jewelry. Amy also diligently works
information booths and raises funds to pay for playground equipment.
Amy’s next challenge is to push her disabled child in a brand
new wheelchair as they participate in the next 5K Dyngus Day Dash. She willingly
does all this while she takes her daughter to speech, occupational and physical
therapy and provides for her ongoing care. The family is even
participating in a study through a Chicago research clinic to help understand
the role genetics plays in her daughter’s disease all with the intent of
helping others.
Amy has devoted herself to raising funds and awareness of the
disease that her daughter struggles with everyday, all in the hope of fighting
the disease by finding a cure. Helping keep other families from the
disease is her dream. Providing the best possible quality of life for her
daughter is her mission.
